The inner workings of Engineering Insurance

It is understandable why many businesses would assume that Engineering Insurance would not apply to them, but if you have a lift or a boiler on your business premises, then this cover should not be overlooked.

Regular inspection of boilers, lifts and other types of work equipment is compulsory under the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974, and as such Engineering Inspection is often included as a useful additional service with Engineering Insurance.

Lifts, steam boilers, and even window cleaning equipment need to be regularly checked to ensure they are not jeopardizing the safety of your working environment through poor maintenance or malfunction. Because the range of equipment is so broad it is a cover product which will likely be relevant to most businesses – certainly any that have boilers of lifts.

What does Engineering Insurance cover?

• Own Surrounding Property – cover applies to boiler and pressure plant and covers damage to own surrounding property following the plant exploding due to internal pressure.

• Breakdown / Explosion and Collapse

• Sudden and Unforeseen Damage – provides cover for risks including Accidental Damage, Operator Error, Frost Damage, Leakage, Cracking, Fracturing and Ingress of Foreign Bodies.

Do I need it?

As with any insurance, you need to be sure that you are able to cover the costs of any unplanned engineering emergencies. If you are not, then you should consider Engineering Insurance and Inspection.

Because of the tight rules around inspection, incidents such as boiler explosions are, thankfully, rare. When they do occur, however, the consequences can be severe.

They are costly too, when you take into account not only any repairs that need to be carried out to the plant and any property in the immediate and surrounding vicinity that has been damaged, but any legal action that arises out of the incident. If someone is injured in an explosion of plant or equipment that you own, then the responsibility lies with you.

This is why both Engineering Inspection and Insurance can be so important.
